Salinas, California…Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley (MOWSV) currently delivers fresh, locally sourced and prepared frozen meals every Wednesday to our homebound seniors, 60 years+, in South Monterey County, including the communities of Soledad and Gonzales. Last month, we began a pilot program, in addition to our meal delivery program, by expanding our reach and creating a new monthly program for active seniors, 60 years+, who are eager to interact with others after these months of isolation due to Covid-19 restrictions. We call this pilot program SOCOS SOCIAL (SOuth COunty Seniors SOCIAL). Our aim is to provide an opportunity for local seniors impacted by Covid-19 to interact, enjoy a fresh lunch and live music, while receiving important information on local resources for seniors in a safe and fun environment. We plan to hold these “social hours” monthly; on the second Tuesday of the month in Soledad and on the third Thursday of the month in Gonzales.
The upcoming SOCOS Social in Soledad will be held Tuesday, October 12th from 11:00am – 1:00pm at the Soledad Community Center with live music by Peter Meuse. Advanced registration is strongly encouraged. If you are a senior, 60 years+ and live in Soledad, please call 831-223-5250 to register or you may visit the Soledad Community Center, 560 Walker Drive, to register in person.
In Gonzales, the SOCOS Social will be held Thursday, October 21st from 11:00am – 1:00pm at the St. Theodore’s Church Parish Hall – 116 S. Belden Street, with live music. Advanced registration is strongly encouraged. If you are a senior, 55 years+ and live in Gonzales, please call Marilyn Duby at 831-675-2579 or Lupe Kinnear at 831-809-8216 to register.
For both events, The Food Bank for Monterey County will provide all guests with a complimentary goodie box filled with local fresh fruits and vegetables.  A variety of senior resources will be accessible at the social, including information from Alliance on Aging, California Highway Patrol, ITN Monterey County (Independent Transportation Network), Interim Inc., Legal Services for Seniors and more. Representatives from these agencies will be available to talk with seniors about their specific concerns.
Since our beginnings in 1972, Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley, Inc. has been delivering nutritious meals to seniors who are homebound and cannot shop and cook for themselves and so much more. With the support of our generous donors, we’ll continue to fulfill our mission - as long as people need a helping hand and a good meal. For more information on our meal service, please visit
