Recently, a group called Protect Monterey County qualified an initiative that will be on the November 2016 ballot that will shut down the oil industry in Monterey County (“County”). Like agriculture and hospitality, the oil industry is a significant economic driver in the County. The oil industry employs over 1,900 people and contributes over $200 million in federal, state and local taxes. The two operators of the San Ardo oil field are the largest tax payer in Monterey County generating nearly $8 million for the County’s general fund.
Monterey County for Energy Independence is a broad coalition of organizations and individuals that support Monterey County’s oil industry and the critical need for energy independence. The coalition includes, among other organizations and individuals, the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, the Monterey Business Council, the Monterey County Farm Bureau, the Monterey County Cattlemen’s Association and the Monterey County Hospitality Association.
A representative of MCEI would like to present the King City Chamber of Commerce with information on the oil industry in County, discuss the adverse impact on the initiative on oil production in the County, and obtain an endorsement from the Chamber opposing this initiative. We would limit the presentation to 15-20 minutes with a short Q&A after the presentation.
